For all our readers we will now be bringing you two regular weekly full profiles from the 11 & and upcoming 12th editions of Wine behind the label with our ratings. This should give you an excellent idea of what you can enjoy when purchasing a full guide. Here David provides a new profile of the Tuscan Antinori family operation in the Napa Valley.
>> Antica (Napa Valley)
Located in the Atlas Peak District, this is the Tuscan ANTINORI firm’s Napa Valley outpost. The substantial 1,200 acre estate is found on a high plain and at an altitude ranging from 1,400 to 1,800 feet. The 600 acres of vineyards are above the fog line and planted in sparse, rocky well-drained soils in a natural amphitheatre. A number of wines are made with some available only direct from the winery. The two Cabernet Sauvignon reds and Chardonnay are available in the market place. Chardonnay is sourced from some of the lower sited vines, which have the lowest night temperatures promoting acidity in the grapes. The higher plots of the vineyard are planted to the Bordeaux varieties and with slightly warmer nights provide reds with well-ripened fruit and tannins. The estate also now includes the west facing Townsend Vineyard, purchased in 1998 and planted on volcanic soils.
Antica winery and vineyards
Elegant, stylish Chardonnay has the fresh edge enhanced with early morning harvesting. It is whole cluster pressed, barrel fermented and aged on lees with malolactic fermentation further adding to the texture. The Cabernet Sauvignon is solely varietal with attractive berry fruits and a hint of mocha. There is an extensive fruit sort, vatting of up to two weeks before ageing in French barrels for up to 16 months. The single vineyard Townsend Cabernet Sauvignon is similarly vinified although it spends a couple of months longer in wood, which is all new. The other cellar door wines include Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, an approachable Bordeaux blend NapaBella and a Muscat G & G Soracco. (DM)
