Ch. Talbot (Saint-Julien 2ème CC)
Originally a Cordier négociant property, Talbot has been retained by members of the family and the quality of the Grand Vin has remained reasonably consistent, particularly after 1995. It is now very international in style and quite different to some of the very firm earlier examples under Cordier ownership. To help with the development of the quality of the wine, they hired Stéphane Derenoncourt as a consultant in 2007, who has instigated several changes to the winemaking of this 102 ha estate, the biggest in St. Julien.
The modern chai at Talbot
Fruit is now being picked at a riper stage and yields have been reduced. The wine is aged in 50% new oak for around 15 months and total production of the Grand Vin has now been reduced to around 25,000 cases. Connetable Talbot, has been good in the better years and there is a small amount of a white, Caillou Blanc, produced under the Bordeaux AC. This used to be variable with marked sulphur but a more modern approach to its vinification is now undertaken with better results. In 2017, they appointed Jean-Michel Laporte as managing director, who was previously the managing director at CH. LA CONSEILLANTE. Rating applies to vintages from 2009, ★★★✩ before that. (NB)
