This should give you an excellent idea of what you can enjoy when purchasing a full guide. Here David profiles one of the best in Marlborough, New Zealand.

Dog Point Vineyard (Marlborough)

Of Marlborough’ s new names this is arguably the hottest. Both the owners have had a long relationship with CLOUDY BAY – James Healy on the winemaking side, Ivan Sutherland as a viticulturalist. They have only recently launched their own label and then only from a portion of their vineyards as the intention is to remain a small, hands-on operation. The wines are less ‘made’ than many in the region and only indigenous yeasts are used. Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc has attracted the most interest. It comes from a specific plot, is vinified and aged in used French oak with extended lees contact and has atypical density and extract. It is well balanced, with more structure and richness than other Marlborough examples in this style. 

Covered vineyards at Dog Point

A regular Sauvignon vinified in stainless steel is also made. Full but well structured, it exudes exuberant red capiscum and tropical fruit. There’s also an impressive Chardonnay that spends 18 months in French oak. It is concentrated and powerful yet restrained with an intense grapefruit and mealy complexity. A fine and stylish Pinot Noir completes the high class range. (DM)
