Ferghettina – full profile
For all our readers we will now be bringing you regular full profiles from the 11th & and upcoming 12th editions of Wine behind the label with our ratings. This should give you an excellent idea of what you can enjoy when purchasing a full guide. Here Neville profiles Ferghettina in Lombardy.
Roberto Gatti left his long-standing job as cellarmaster at BELLAVISTA in 1990 and set up his own operation with just 3 hectares of vines on the shore of lake Sebino. Now aided and abetted by his daughter Laura and son Matthew, they produce some 350,000 bottles annually of top class Franciacorta. A new, state of the art winery has now been built to house all the operations necessary for the production of top class wines.
Cellars at Ferghettina
The range runs through the gamut of Brut, Extra Brut, Saten and Rosé (and more) with a display of balanced finesse in all the wines. Outstanding is the Pas Dosé 33 Vintage Riserva, 100% Chardonnay, where attention to detail in the vinification process leads to a wine of great delicacy and finesse. Not far behind are the Miledí Vintage Brut and Rosé, the Brut made from 100% Chardonnay again, mineral and citrusy and the Rosé, from 100% Pinot Noir with nuances of raspberry and strawberry. There is also a Brut and an Extra Brut NV but these have not been tasted. Also not tasted are the still Curtefranca red and white. Franciacorta is undoubtedly Italy’s answer to Champagne and this producer is in the vanguard of confirming this. (NB)
