Here David Moore profiles Jean-Francois Jacouton from Saint-Joseph in the Northern Rhone, added with the 11th edition for the first time.
>> Jean-François Jacouton (Saint-Joseph)
This small artisan domaine is a relatively new name in Saint-Joseph, with cellars in the village of Vion to the north of Tournon on the west bank of the Rhône. Established in 2016, prior to this Jean-François Jacouton worked in the cellars at Domaine DURAND in Cornas. Domaine wines are produced from vineyards in Saint-Joseph as well as IGP Collines Rhodannienes and forward IGP de l’Ardèche comprising a white “Tentation” from Marsanne and Chasselas and a Syrah “A deux pas” . From other vineyard sources than Jacouton’s own domaine, very good Condrieu and a Cornas “Terre de Feu” are now made.

The Condrieu offers restrained honeyed, peachy flavours and a background mineral, citrus quality. Cornas is full and structured with dark, spicy fruit. A further red Saint-Joseph is also made, “Sortilege”. The red Saint-Joseph Pierre d’Iserand is finely crafted and is a medium, elegant style with a hint of herb spice and white pepper underpinning the black fruits. The white Saint Joseph is very sylish, from a blend of Roussanne and Marsanne. It is barrel fermented in used casks and aged on lees. There are an abundance of white and citrus fruit tones as well as a mineral edge. The very well priced Granit is an excellent alternative to a lighter Condrieu, from vines grown in granite soils.
