This should give you an excellent idea of what you can enjoy when purchasing a full guide. Here Neville profiles recently added Tenuta Sant’Antonio from the Veneto.

The four Castagnedi brothers have catapulted their father’s vineyard holdings into a state of the art full wine producing facility enabling them to exploit to the fullest the 100 hectares of vines they own. Growing Corvinone, Corvina and Rondinella for their reds and Garganega, Trebbiano and Chardonnay for their whites, they are producing model examples of Valpollicella, Amarone and Soave. The single vineyard Amarone della Valpollicella Campo dei Gigli heads the range, although in certain years a Riserva, Lilium Est, is produced but this has not been tasted. The Campo dei Gigli is vinified in new open 500-litre French oak casks, in temperature-controlled premises. Harvesting is done by double hand selection in trays. Fermentation is achieved by natural alcohol with hand punching-down for about 30-40 days in wooden barrels. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally in 500 litre casks. Bâtonnage is done once a week for the first year. The wine then spends 3 years in new French oak before bottling and release. The result is a wine of considerable power and body which can cellar for up to 20 years. 

Tenuta Sant’Antonio

Three Valpollicellas are made – their regular Nanfré, Superiore La Bandina and a Ripasso, Monti Garbi. La Bandina is well balanced without the intensity of the Amarone, of course, but nevertheless the two years it spends in 500 litre French oak casks ensures long keeping abilities. Three Soaves are also produced, the entry level Fontana and the Monte Ceriani Cru are unoaked, whilst the Vecchie Vigne has the benefit of 6 months in oak and is rounded, full and aromatic. (NB)
