>> Weingut zum Sternen (Aargau)

This small family estate, which has been in the same hands since 1921 and now run by its fifth generation, is producing a small amount of premium wines. Situated high up in the Alps in the central Swiss Canton of Aargau, it is renowned locally for its Pinot Noirs, although they do produce wines from around a dozen local and international grape varietals as well on their 11 hectare estate. The Kloster Sion is their most important vineyard and their designated Pinot Noir Réserve is well made with great balance between fruit and acidity with a good persistent finish, if perhaps a little on the light side. After the grapes are cold soaked for 15 hours they are gently pressed and vinified and matured for just over a year in new Allier 225ltr barriques which ensures that the wine is not over oaked displaying soft tannins. This wine oozes class with a good price/quality ratio.

The Chardonnay Wannenberg, also reasonably priced, is fermented on its lees in small oak barriques of which only 20% are new, showing fresh citrussy fruit and is also classy. We haven’t had a chance yet to taste the rest of the range and these wines may be hard to find unless you are in Switzerland as they only export about 2% of their production, but it would seem that all wines from this producer would be worth trying if you are on a visit to that country.
