Bodegas Lan (Rioja)

Lan is a significant bodega producing an excellent range of wines in both traditional and modern styles. The firm has a 70 ha estate, Viña Lanciano, and although bought in fruit contributes towards the lower level wines the top reds are only made from estate owned and produced grapes. The growers the bodega does work with ensure low yields and ripe fruit. The Crianza is a classic, supple red cherry fruited style, with ageing for 12 months in a mix of French and American wood and comes solely from Tempranillo. The Reserva offers more depth and hints of spice and ripe black fruits. A similar period in oak is followed by a couple of years in bottle before release. A proportion of Mazuelo adds a further dimension. The Gran Reserva, solely from estate Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Garnacha fruit, is a traditionally slightly evolved style with elegant red cherry fruit and soft tannins. Both Mazuelo and Garnacha add character. The D12 is a modern, fleshy well priced red, a varietal Tempranillo, with dark blackberry and cocoa spiced fruit spending 10 months in both French and American barrels.

Old vines at Bodegas Lan

The Viña Lanciano is from the firm’s own vineyards and from over 30 year old vines. It is curiously aged for six months in Russian and then 12 months in French oak. The blend is Tempranillo and Mazuelo. The Lan A Mano Edición Limitada is a thoroughly modern style and comes from a single vineyard Pago El Rincón and a blend of Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano, on the Lanciano estate. It goes through the malolactic in barrel and is aged in both French and Russian wood but only for nine months which lifts the quality of its rich, rounded black fruit texture. The top wine is the Culmen, a blend of Tempranillo and Graciano, also from Pago El Rincón and from the oldest vines. This is a structured, richly textured wine with intense spicy, berry fruit character and real depth. The malolactic fermentation in French oak is followed by ageing for a total of 18 months and then 18 in bottle before release. Lan also owns the fine Bodega Santiago Ruiz in Rias Baixas. (DM)
