>> Boulevard Napoléon (Minervois La Livinière)

This small, high quality project based in the heart of the Minervois, with a small winery in the village of La Livinière, is a partnership between London restaurateur Trevor Gulliver and winemaker Benjamin Darnault, who has had international experience working with CHAPOUTIER in Australia. The wines are sourced from old vineyards in the La Livinière appellation cru. Although the wines of the cru are among some of the best in the Languedoc, the key wines at Boulevard Napoléon take the IGP de L’Hérault classification.

The winery is set into the ramparts of La Livinière

Five wines are made, all mainly single varietal examples sourced from old vines, averaging 70 years of age, and from high altitude vineyards, naturally low in yield and with great potential. As well as the three wines covered below a Cinsault, L’Abeuradou is also made as well as La Cabanne, a Cabernet Franc. Both the Grenache and Carignan reds are impressive examples of their respective varieties. Carignan is dark, spicy and impressively concentrated with vibrant, rich fruit. Hand harvesting is followed by a traditional vinification and ageing in a mix of oak and tank. The Grenache Le Pujol is more overtly red berry fruited but with an impressive depth and stylish herb scents, vinification and ageing follow a similar pattern to the Carignan. Grenache Gris is rare throughout the Languedoc-Roussillon area and this is a fine example. Richly textured, fresh, lightly herbal with a hint of citrus the wine gets a short skin contact after whole bunch pressing. Fermentation in barriques is followed by a year on lees in barrel.

Readers should also note Trevor Gulliver sells a small range of regional wines under his St John label and is a local source for a number of other top small wine domaines. (DM)
