>> Cobb Wines (Sonoma Coast)
This is a small Pinot Noir specialist producing wines from a number of vineyards on the cool Sonoma Coast. The home Coastlands Vineyard is farmed with sustainable practices and is indeed “Certified Suatainable” . The Cobb’s also work closely with their other vineyard sources with wines additionally produced from the Rice-Spivak Vineyard (£F) planted in volcanic soils and the Emmaline Ann Vineyard (£F) with a south-west exposition and significant coastal fog providing very nervy, structured wines. The Jack Hill Vineyard Pinot is in a more expressive style with a combination of bright berry fruit and a fresh aromatic edge. It is cool and surrounded by fir forests and with a west facing aspect.
From the Coastlands Vineyard, five wines are released. There is a release from a selection of the vineyard blocks, Coastland Vineyard (£F), two 1906 Block wines, planted in 4 acres to a combination of Pommard (£F) and Mount Eden clones. A further release is the Old Firs Block, planted amidst 275 year old Douglas Fir Trees and given extensive oak ageing of 34 months. There is also a very limited release, Diane Cobb (£G) which is sourced from a selection of older nursery vines established by the late Diane Cobb now nearly 30 years old. The 1906 Block Mount Eden is a notably dark fruited style, with a firm and supple structure. The wine spends just under two years in around one-third new French oak with 5% whole clusters during the primary fermentation. Will offer impressive drinking at five years of age. (DM)
