>>Rocca Brettia (Calabria)

Alessandro Volpe and his team acquired these 20 year old vineyards in 2017 on the slopes of a historical hill, once a defensive fortress, now the site of the ancient Swabian castle of Cosenza. The soil is silty-sand and ferrous, very poor in nutrients and the vines cultivated are Magliocco, Merlot, Aglianico, Greco Nero, Barbera, Pinot Bianco, Greco Bianco, Mantonico, Chardonnay, Incrocio Manzoni. They are densely planted and in close rows, the vine training systems is spurred cordon and only 400/500 kilograms per hectare are produced.

At present only three wines are made – The Merlot (100%) shows true varietal flavours with some elegance and upfront fruit. Aged for about 8 months in stainless steel and a further 3 months in bottle makes this an easy drinking wine but the 14% abv may make it wise to limit consumption at one session! Even more alcoholic is the Aglianico at 15% abv – it’s deep and unctuous and the 24-month ageing in stainless steel and oak nevertheless gives it harmony and complexity to its dark, plummy and spicy fruit. The Bianco is a blend of 60% Pinot Bianco and 40% Greco Bianco – fruity and fresh with fair persistence on the finish. No oak – 8 months in stainless steel and 3 months in bottle before release and a hefty 14% abv again. (NB)
