Windsor restaurant – Luxembourg

Windsor restaurant – Luxembourg

WindsorA quick flip over to Luxembourg for lunch with my friend André posed some difficulties since the first five restaurants we tried to book a table at were all closed. Luxembourg, like France, almost closes down for August, but we did manage to find a decent place to eat, the Windsor restaurant in Bertrange, in the suburbs of Luxembourg City. This is a gourmet restaurant, strangely located in the middle of an industrial estate, but I suppose there is plenty of good business here from the captains of industry in the area.

Being holiday time it was half empty, but notably there were three blokes having a rather vinous time even as we arrived for lunch. The restaurant has one of its themed menus a menu featuring lobster and Wagyu beef and our starter of a carpaccio of both in a Yuzu marinade was generous and tasty. Our main course was a Wagyu beef Chuck Steak cooked as you like it on a teppanyaki grill with a slightly sweetened sauce from the juices accompanied with a bowl of hand cut potato chips. A selection of excellent desserts finished the meal which was washed down by a bottle of Thierry Germain’s Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur-Champigny 2011 and very reasonably priced it was, too at €36. By the time we left, the three blokes were on their fifth bottle of wine although it seemed that they were still only on their second course of food. Business must be good here!

With the three courses at €55 on this menu (there are other menus and an á la carte selection) and considering the ingredients used, this represented very good value. The wine list is quite comprehensive with wines from all over the globe, but as would be expected it is heavily weighted towards French wines. Some of the wines aren’t cheap by a long chalk, but there are bargains to be found, as we did with the Saumur-Champigny. In a way, this has to be a destination restaurant, as it is certainly out of the main tourist area of Luxembourg, but if you have the time to spare it is well worth a visit. And as you can see from our ratings chart on our Restaurant Reviews Scoring Explained page – it’s at the top end of restaurants worth seeking out.
