The Latest – April 2019

Our March highlights and updates for you since the last Latest!

David found many excellent wineries showing at the Thorman Hunt 40th Anniversary Portfolio tasting and highlights will be featured in our blogs in the next few weeks. Meanwhile you can catch up with Neville’s profile of Rocca Brettia, a top winery in Calabria, Michael Edward’s profile of Ayala in Champagne and David’s profile of  Boulevard Napoléon (Minervois La Livinière). Jim Budd reviews the Vincent Delaporte domaine in Sancerre and Kathleen Burk assesses the Barboursville Vineyards project in Virginia. And Neville posts up a personal tribute to John Shafer, one of the pioneers who put modern Napa Valley wines on the world map and who died recently at the age of 94. Neville worked with John for several years as his UK distributor when he was the owner of The Wine Treasury.

Neville had a wonderful and very special family lunch at Le Colombier in Chelsea, an oasis of French popular cuisine – a typical restaurant that you would find in any corner of France – no frills, entirely predictable, what you see is what you get and not a single blow lamp in sight.

You can read the blog here with a great review by Sonia of their delicious lunch.

Our Value for Money Wines Pro App was put through its paces and suffice to say Neville reports that there are some really good value wines on the Le Colombier list according to the Wine behind the label price/quality ratios and we chose two, one that came out as exceptional value for money in the VFMW Pro App and one that came out just as value for money. The 3 star 2012 La Chapelle de Bébian Languedoc-Roussillon wine at £29 would have been good value at even twice the price!

There is an in depth appraisal of the wine list at Le Colombier which is available in the Members section.  If you want to read it fully – you have to join the Club!

Members, especially those who like an awful lot of offal will be delighted with Sonia’s quick and easy recipe for a delicious and tasty dish of calf’s kidneys, also with a money saving tip, so that’s even more reason to join!

Brexit, as we write, is delayed so to celebrate Easter we are extending a couple of offers for you!

In case the Pound takes a nosedive against the Euro come Brexit day – the special offer for our Mark Thomas hand-made (and mouth-blown) lead free crystal wine glasses is extended  – 20% off until 12th April by using the coupon code “mt20off” to get a 20% discount from the prices on the Mark Thomas shop page.

Also on the print version of the new 11th edition we will offer a 10% discount until 12 April and the books are available for shipping in time for Easter perusal. Coupon code “printdelay10”.

If you wanted to give a different gift for Easter do have a look at our Masnaghetti Vineyard Maps, Alessandro Masnaghetti is one of Italy’s leading wine journalists and apart from producing his monthly Enogea magazine, has been spending the best part of the last 20 years painstakingly mapping in extraordinary detail, the vineyards in Italy’s leading wine production areas. There are 29 different maps available in all and we are delighted to be the exclusive UK distributors. New is the extraordinary framed 3-D version of the Barolo vineyards – something to accompany the already acclaimed 3-D version of the Chianti Vineyards.

We wish you happy eating, happy drinking and happy travelling.

Neville and David
