A Donkey and Goat Winery Berkeley
An exciting and recently established producer providing juicy, exuberant Rhône style reds and Pinot Noir as well as rosé and both a Roussanne and a couple of Chardonnays. The Brandts worked in the Rhône and Burgundy before deciding to establish their own operation in 2003, which is warehouse based. The Grenache rosé is ripe and characterful, gaining an added dimension from fruit sourced from pre-prohibition vines. The real excitement here though are the reds. The Fenaughty bottling comes from El Dorado and offers impressive structure and grip as well as dark, spicy fruit from vines planted in decomposed granite. A touch of Viognier is included in the blend which adds to its spicy character. A number of additional Syrahs are also made from El Dorado, Mendocino Ridge and Anderson valley sources. Yields are small and the wines are bottled unfiltered. New sources and wines are being added all the time. Following the wineries website is a must. (DM)
