A To Z Wineworks Chehalem Mountains
This partnership of four friends, Deb and Bill Hatcher and Cheryl Francis and Sam Tannahill was established in 2000 and have grown to become Oregon’s largest winery group. As well as A to Z they produce wines under their own premium labels: Deb and Bill make HATCHER Pinot Noir while Cheryl and Sam have a small range under their FRANCIS-TANNAHILL label. They have also now acquired the Rex Hill winery. The A to Z wines provide them with real volume and enable them to source fruit from throughout Oregon producing a well priced range of accessible easy drinking fruit accented reds and whites. While not complex, the wines have a vibrancy and fresh fruit quality at this level that has long been missing in the State. The usual Oregon suspects, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Riesling, are all important components of the range as is increasingly, Chardonnay. Sangiovese is the primary variety providing an interesting light red cherry character in the rosé. The whites and the rosé should be drunk young and fresh, the Pinot Noir is great young but will cellar for a short time. (DM)
