Abacela Winery Umpqua Valley
The Jones produce an excellent small range of Spanish and Rhône style wines and are showing the real potential of these styles in the Umpqua Valley. The fruit is sourced mainly from the estate Fault Line vineyards. Both whites are also fermented in stainless steel to emphasise their pure fruit character. The clean and lightly mineral Viognier comes from estate vineyards and Steelhead Run in the Applegate Valley. A touch more aromatically intense is a very characterful floral, citrusy Albariño. Characterful Garnacha (Grenache), aged in neutral oak, is firmly structured with ripe chalky tannins and dark berry and herb-scented fruit. Syrah is co-fermented with a little Viognier adding a touch of spiciness to its dark blackberry fruit, black pepper and subtly vanilla scented oak. Ageing is in small French oak with 20% new. Equally impressive is a full, big and powerfully structured Tempranillo, more in the style of a Toro than a Rioja. A little new oak, around 10%, is used. Both this and the Syrah will develop well for 5 or 6 years. A rosé is also made from Grenache and reds Tannat, Malbec and a further premium Tempranillo, Paramour. (DM)
