Alban Vineyard Edna Valley
Over a period of 10 years or so John Alban has established himself as one of the finest Rhône specialists on the Central Coast. He has around 20 ha (50 acres) planted to vines in the Edna Valley from which he has been turning out increasingly fine examples. His estate vineyards are located in a cool sector of the Edna Valley, and this is reflected in the style, intensity and refinement of his wines. As well as the estate Viognier he makes a good basic example from various Central Coast sources. The estate Roussanne is one of the state’s better examples, while Grenache is sourced from warmer Paso Robles. It is the remarkable Syrah bottlings, though – all of them intense and very well crafted – which stand out. Reva is the most approachable, Lorraine and the pricey Seymour sturdier and more structured. Limited-release Pandora is a cellar blend of Alban’s best lots of Syrah and Grenache. Pinot Noir is also now being made under the North banner. (DM)
