Alma Rosa Winery Sta. Rita Hills
Richard Sanford is one of the most famous names of not only the Sta. Rita Hills but of Santa Barbara County. He was one of the founders of the great Sanford and Benedict Vineyard, a source of some legendary Pinot Noir and he also established the SANFORD Winery. He and his wife Thekla have now created a new winery based on organic farming practices and producing a range of well made and priced varietal reds and whites as well a number of vineyard designated wines from their own La Encantada and El Jabali vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills. The regular whites covered here are essentially clean, pure fruit driven styles, the Pinot Gris very spicy and Alsatian in style, the Pinot Blanc aged in used oak adding structure and the Chardonnay getting just a touch of new oak for fermentation. The malolactic though is blocked to preserve the fresh character of the wine. Of the two Pinot Noir bottlings, the Sta. Rita Hills is bright and forward, marked by vibrant strawberry and cherry scented fruit. La Encantada by contrast offers a more spicy, complex, earthy character with less obvious primary fruit and impressive structure and grip. Give it two or three years cellaring to add a further dimension. (DM)
