Alpha Domus Hawkes Bay
Alpha Domus was established in 1991 and has only been making wines since 1995, yet it has produced some of the best reds from Hawkes Bay in recent top vintages. Grapes are sourced exclusively from vineyards planted to Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Chardonnay, plus Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and some Malbec. The Navigator, based on Merlot but complemented by the Cabernets and Malbec, is ripe and composed with good concentration – as, too, is a regular Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon. AD is the premium label. The Aviator (Cabernet Sauvignon with some Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc) is very impressive in its ripeness, intensity and concentration and better balanced than previously. AD Chardonnay is slightly over-worked but richly textured, while an unoaked Chardonnay is tangy and peachy if wanting for more expression. Sémillon appears in a regular, very ripe style, more complex AD version as well as rich botrytised AD Noble Selection.
