Andersons Conn Valley Vineyards Napa Valley
Todd Anderson creates his family’s small range of wines both from home Conn Valley as well as other vineyards with winemaker Mac Sawyer. The reds here in particular during the last decade have emerged as some of the finest and best priced examples from an area notable for its inflated prices. Todd also has his own micro garage style operation GHOST HORSE VINEYARDS from which he produces three wines that compete with the world’s very best for both high quality and for high prices. There are now 11ha (26.5 acres) under vine – the property was originally planted back in 1983 and the first vintage 1987. Sauvignon Blanc is relatively new and comes from Lake County where the warm climate produces a ripe and opulent barrel-fermented example which gains additional depth from just over 20% Sémillon in the blend. Chardonnay from the cool Green Island Vineryard in southern Napa is in a ripe, peachy, tropical style, full and impressively concentrated with a rich underlying leesy character and sufficient acidity (the malolactic is avoided). However, it is the Bordeaux styled reds which truly stand out. The softest and most accessible of these is the Right Bank red, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The wine is dark, cedary and with an underlying mocha character from its oak and has very impressive depth. Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% varietal and comes solely from estate grown grapes. As one would expect the wine is tighter and more firmly structured with subtle cassis notes and finely chiselled tannins. The top wine, Éloge is a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc and a little Merlot and Petit Verdot. It is richly textured and opulent but with an elegance rarely found in the Napa. Bottled without filtration expect the top reds here to age extremely well. (DM)
