Andreas Laible Baden
This relatively little-known (outside of Germany at any rate) producer makes wines of a quality unprecedented in the Ortenau area of Baden. From just 7.5 ha of vineyards there is consistently high quality, not just in Riesling (Klingelberger as it is called here) but also in Gewürztraminer and Scheurebe. All the wines come from the Durbacher Plauelrain site and the top examples have lovely concentrated, fruit, with depth, body and good acidity.
The top wine is the Riesling Auslese Trocken, a rich, honeyed yet dry, concentrated and complex example with great length of flavour. A richer Achat bottling of Riesling Spätlese Trocken contrasts with a racier regular version that offers a cooler spectrum of fruit flavours. Gewürztraminer is lush, ripe and intense and there is a cocktail of fruit in a rich but well-balanced Scheurebe. Chardonnay, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder are also made to a high standard.
