Anselmo Mendes Vinho Verde
Anselmo Mendes makes Vinho Verde under his eponymous label and consults widely to, among others, Quinta do Ameal, Casa de Cello (both Vinho Verde) and Douro producer Alves de Sousa. Mendes was born in Moncao, together with Melgaco, Vinho Verde’s hotspot for Alvarinho, a grape which he’s “studied” for 20 years and to good effect – he is a master of the variety. His Alvarinhos come in many guises (unwooded, wooded, sweet and sparkling). Whatever the style and, irrespective of price point, the common thread is that they deliver on quality and finesse. Meticulous canopy management ensures that fruit is ripe. A slow fermentation with natural and selected yeasts followed by lees-ageing/stirring accounts for a silky texture. Muros Antigos, the entry-level range, comprises an Alvarinho/Loureiro blend and single varietal wines; the single varietal Alvarinho develops limes on toast and lemon butter with a few years ageing while maintaining its freshness and persistence. Contacto, first introduced in 2008, is a ripe, peachy wine which owes its exuberant mid-palate to skin contact. A more serious and structured Muros de Melgaco Alvarinho 2009 is fermented and aged in untoasted French oak for 6 months, of which 10% is new. It benefits from a couple of years in bottle. Barrel samples of two 2009 vintage single vineyard Alvarinhos (both four star wines), one new and as yet unnamed, the second called Curtimenta (first trialled in 2005) show fabulous precision and minerality. A passito method dessert wine at the drier end of the spectrum is textured and complex. (SA)
