Anwilka Vineyard Stellenbosch
There is no doubt, Anwilka has emerged as one of the Cape’s very greatest reds and a wine of indisputable world-class. The vineyard is a joint venture between Bruno Prats, who formerly owned the great Saint-Estèphe Second Growth COS D’ESTOURNEL, Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, the coproprietor of Château ANGÉLUS and Lowell Jooste, whose family own KLEIN CONSTANTIA. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah and comes from the firms wholly owned vineyard in Helderberg. The vineyard was originally planted in 1998 and benefits from cooling ocean breezes barely four miles away coming from False Bay The soils are sparse and provide low vigour in the vines and have good drainage, reducing the need for irrigation. Vigorous pruning and green harvesting are practised and the wine comes from the best plots only. Winemaking is very much on Bordeaux lines resulting in a wine of supple tannins and impressive depth and intensity. Wisely the new wood is not overdone and the wine spends just 9 months in oak. (DM)
