Araujo Estate Wines Napa Valley
These formidable wines are all produced from the Eisele Vineyard, originally owned by JOSEPH PHELPS, in the north-eastern part of the Napa Valley. As well as the Cabernet Sauvignon there is a first class Syrah and most recently Altagracia, a Bordeaux red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Both are sadly produced in tiny quantities. Even scarcer is the occasional bottling of Viognier. The variety is mainly planted to blend with the Sauvignon Blanc and to provide fragrance for the Syrah. Since its purchase by former owner Bart Araujo in 1990, a considerable effort has been put into the vineyard with its superbly drained stony soils and mountain-moderated climate. The approach is as one would expect, delivering wines with rich, immensely concentrated fruit and supple and rounded tannins. The Cabernet is blended with a little Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. The Sauvignon Blanc has a hint of Viognier and is part barrel- and part tank-fermented and then aged on lees for 6 months. With a total of just 16.6 ha (41 acres) under vine there is an inevitable scarcity here. Release prices are very fair but the auction market quickly gets a hold. All the reds are immensely ageworthy, however you might consider broaching them with 5 or 6 years’ age, particularly if you’re lucky enough to have a case or two. The property was sold in the summer of 2013 to the Pinault family whose other wine interests include Château Lato ur. (DM)
