For all our readers we will now be bringing you regular full profiles from Wine behind the label with our ratings and price guides. This is one of the winery profiles for December included in the just published 11th digital edition edition 2020, which should give a small idea of what to look for with the guide, which can be purchased itself or included (virtually free) as part of an annual membership package. Here David profiles one of Spain’s single estate appellations (Pago).

>> Arínzano (Pago de Arínzano)

This was established as the first single Pago appellation bodega in northern Spain and is located in Navarra. All the wines though take the Pago classification though, not any other DO. It is a substantial property of some 355 ha with 128 ha planted to vines and all taking the single Pago appellation classification. Two Chardonnays and four reds are now made as well as a rosado, Hacienda de Arínzano. Entry level red and Chardonnay also take the Hacienda de Arínzano label. The Chardonnay is a fresh, zesty style with restrained use of oak and 30% of the barrels new. The red Hacienda is a vibrant Joven red berry fruited style, a blend of mainly Tempranillo with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The other reds are a step up with more depth and a firmer structure. La Casona is again dominated by Tempranillo with impressive dark fuits, supple tannins and good concentration. A small propertion of Merlot is also included. There is a similarly priced organic varietal Merlot, Biológico de Arínzano.

The Arínzano Estate Property

The flagship red is the big, powerful, structured Arínzano Gran Vino, restrained, elegant and impressively intense with very fine polished tannins and with a cedary complexity. It is solely from Tempranillo and oak is well judged, 50% new and aging for 14 months. The top Chardonnay is also labelled Gran Vino. It is in marked contrast to the Hacienda example, a wine with a rich, creamy, biscuity texture and very restrained citrus notes and a hint of vanilla from 11 months in small oak.  (DM)
