Matteo Ascheri has an energy to match his bear-like stature. A list of his accomplishments includes planting Viognier and Syrah at Bra (outside the Barolo zone), creating the Osteria Murivecchi in the family’s old cellars, promoting the Langhe at home and abroad – yet all the while maintaining realistic prices and good quality. Matteo believes strongly in natural winemaking, and recent vintages show improvement from the regeneration of the family’s vineyards, with wines of bright, pure varietal character. Of two cru Barolos, Vigna dei Pola comes from the Pisapolla cru in the Verduno vineyards that lie south of Ascheri’s base in Bra. The more traditional (moderately long fermentation, ageing in mostly old wood) Sorano comes from Serralunga and has more depth, grip and class. From 1999 fruit from the best vines within Sorano was vinified separately to produce Coste & Bricco which offers yet more style and expression.
