Babcock Vineyards Sta. Rita Hills
Small to medium-sized operation producing an extensive range. Located in the centre of the newly established Sta. Rita Hills AVA, the 32 ha (80 acres) of vineyards close to the ocean are cooled by regular morning mists and afternoon sea breezes. The results are generally impressive, particularly with Pinot Noir; with very exciting limited bottlings “Terroir Exclusives”. Stylish and structured Syrah now goes under the Upper Crust Label. Merlot comes from the Santa Ynez Valley there are a number of stylish Cabernets from the eastern stretches of the Santa Ynez Valley, including the Classic Rock Cuvée and the pricier Block 15 both from the Estelle Vineyard. Among the whites Pinot Grigio is clean and nutty; Sauvignon Blanc is part barrel-fermented, the majority vinified in tank. Chardonnay is also barrel-fermented and put through malolactic to add weight and texture. Prices have always been consistently good here. (DM)
