Barlow Vineyards Napa Valley
Small 20 ha (50-acre) property south of Calistoga, founded in 1994. As well as Merlot and the Barrouge blend (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot), the Smiths produce varietal Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, a Sauvignon Blanc and a little rosé However with a planned production ceiling of just 2,000 cases the wines will always be fairly scarce.
Quality is impressively high and the wines at present offer very good value for Napa. The style is fat and showy but with sufficient grip and acidity provided by cool nights during the summer. The wines are bottled unfiltered and should benefit from 5 years’ ageing. (DM)
