Beckmen Vineyards Santa Ynez Valley
Tom Beckmen established this operation in 1994 when he bought a Santa Barbara ranch which he replanted with different rootstocks. In 1996 he added the Purisma Mountain Vineyard property which is planted at altitude and unusually on limestone-based soils. Warm summer days are complemented by cool nights which provide additional structure in the wines. Tom Beckmen and his son Steve, the winemaker, have been experimenting with biodynamic farming. The Cuvée Le Bec is a soft, forward blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Counoise. More akin to a top Côtes du Rhône than a Châteauneuf-du-Pape this is ripe, fleshy and spicy for drinking over its first 3 or 4 years. The Purisma Grenache is altogether more serious. Dark berry and herb-spiced fruit is not impeded by new oak and the wine offers a firm enough structure to develop well for 6 or 7 years. The original estate vineyards now also provide Sauvignon, Marsanne and some top Syrah. The Purisma Mountain Vineyard is a source not only for Grenache but also Roussanne, Syrah, Mourvèdre and a little Cabernet Sauvignon. An attractive source for Rhône styles, the range is also excellent value. (DM)
