Benessere Vineyards St Helena
Good, well-priced wines with a focus on Italian varieties. While these have often struggled to achieve the quality in California that they do at home, those of Benessere are among the better examples. The top label Phenomenon is a Sangiovese-dominated blend with some Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.
It is a softer, more opulent and vibrant example of the style than its Tuscan counterparts, although firmer and more structured than the lighter, more fruit-driven Sangiovese. There are also a couple of vibrant, characterful Zinfandels.
Pinot Grigio has a light, nutty intensity. Along with the Phenomenon, two further premium reds are released. Sorridonte is only available from the winery and blends Aglianico with Merlot and Syrah, and there is a rare varietal Sagrantino. Expect the Zinfandel Collins Holystone and particularly the Phenomenon to evolve well with half a decade’s ageing. (DM)
