Bergström Wines Chehalem Mountains
This small and impressive winery produces a fairly extensive range of wines including fine Burgundian style Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling as well as Pinot Noir. It is for the latter wines that the winery stands out and in particular a range of excellent single vineyard bottlings. These include a generic well-priced Willamette Valley “Old Stones” bottling, a Cumberland Reserve and single vineyard wines from the Shea, Broadley, De Lancellotti and Nysa Vineyards. These consistently offer a rich, ripe and concentrated Pinot character, full of dark, plummy fruit and firm striking tannins. The home vineyard is perhaps more important than the other single vineyard bottlings, in that it accounts for over 500 cases a year, more than any of the other vineyard designate wines. It is planted on south, south-easterly slopes and offers a very meagre annual yield of less than one and a half tons to the acre. The resulting wines are deep and structured, requiring patience, at least four or five years, for the tight and reserved mineral and cherry-spiced fruit to fully evolve. (DM)
