Bernardus Winery Carmel Valley
The 20 ha (50 acres) of estate vineyards here are all planted to the Bordeaux varieties. Winemaker Mark Chesebro is committed to making traditional ageworthy reds. The Marinus, crafted from highdensity plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, is traditionally vinified with regular pumpovers for extraction. It spends 12 months in new oak after malolactic is completed in tank. The wine is structured and ageworthy – give it 5 or 6 years. There are also now two further estate properties. From Ingrid’s Vineyard comes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, while Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from Parrot Ranch. A number of vineyard designated wines are also made from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Monterey County Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are subtly oaked with barrel-fermentation and lees-stirring. The Sauvignon has a small proportion of Sémillon and is richly textured, more Graves in style than other New World herbaceous examples. Both offer good value. (DM)
