Big Basin Vineyards (Santa Cruz Mountains)

A new name in the Santa Cruz Mountains, established in 1998, producing rich, characterful chocolatey Syrah from high altitude mainly estate-owned vineyards. These were originally planted 100 years ago by French immigrants but the site had fallen into serious decay by the 1960s. Bradley Brown undertook a major project in restoring the site. The Rattlesnake Rock site, planted in 2000, is the source of the first wine and further home vineyard blocks are being developed, planting includes Syrah, Grenache, Roussanne, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with selections from John ALBAN. An increasing number of wines are being released under each variety.

Fog over the Santa Cruz Mountains

In the winery minimal intervention is key to ensuring quality and both must and wine are handled as gently as possible. The Rattlesnake Rock Syrah is oak-aged (90% new French) and is rich, structured and opulent with hints of cocoa and licorice as well as dark black fruit. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered and should develop very well in bottle. Three additional Syrah’s are now released, Old Corral from home estate blocks and Frenchie’s Ranch which is the home estate reserve and from the Coastview Vineyard, the highest site in Monterey County. As well as the range of varietal lebels, blended reds are also important. There is a GSM, while Odeon is Syrah blended with Cabernet, Homestead combines a mix of varieties. (DM)
