Black Sheep Finds Winery Santa Barbara County
Peter Hunken was originally part of the Holus Bolus partnership with Sashi Moorman of PIEDRASASSI. A range of wines is now made under the Black Sheep Finds banner and they are very fairly priced. As well as the Holus Bolus Syrah, there are three single vineyard examples from the Watch Hill Vineyard in Santa Ynez, the Rim Rock Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley and the White Hawk Vineyard in the Los Alamos Valley in northern Santa Barbara County. These are now joined by a Holus Bolus Blanc made from Roussanne. A second label Syrah, Hocus Pocus is a well priced blend of cool and warm climate fruit, and a Hocus Pocus Pinot Noir is also made from the Sta. Rita Hills. The small range is completed by a Santa Ynez Valley Bordeaux red blend, Genuine Risk, which blends Cabernet Sauvignon with lesser amounts of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The Hocus Pocus Syrah is a rich and extracted example full of dark, brambly fruit, more defined by its weight and power than by its origin, it is impressively concentrated. (DM)
