Blair Fox Cellars Santa Barbara County
Blair Fox is the head winemaker for Fess Parker but has his own boutique operation where he has been producing notable wines for some years now. A specialist in Rhône varietals, he won the Andre Tchelistcheff Winemaker of the Year Award at the 2008 San Francisco International Wine Competition. Great attention to detail hallmarks the quality of his wines which are produced in very small quantities. The red, iron rich, nutrient deprived soils of the high altitude Paradise Road vineyard has produced a Viognier with tiny berries, small clusters and very concentrated and rich flavours of apricot and peach. From the same vineyard, a massively structured Syrah is produced with layers and layers of thick, tarry fruit. 26 months in French and American oak, it is also kept for one more year in bottle before being released. Another Syrah, this time from the Tierra Alta Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley was punched down by hand until fermentation was complete, then basket pressed and aged for twenty months in 100% French oak. The result is a wine of great complexity with intense, full fruit and good persistence.. As well as these a Grenache and Petite Sirah are made from the Fox Family Vineyard as well as a red blend the Ambush. Under the Blair Fox Cellars label a rosé, Haylee’s and a white Vermentino Fox Family Vineyard are also made. An additional range of reds and whites are also released under the Fox Wine Co. brand and mostly from Santa Barbara fruit sources. They are a touch cheaper (£D-£E). (NB)
