Bodegas Alto Moncayo Campo de Borja
A recently created bodega moving wine quality and indeed the price achievable in this lesser DO to new levels. Barossa Valley veteran Chris Ringland established the winemaking for the project. His hand has also be seen in the excellent wines to the south in Jumilla at Bodegas EL NIDO. The wines are based on old-vine Garnacha and 62 ha is planted in clay and red slate soils with some vines up to 100 years old. A continental climate and low summer rainfall, as well as organized canopy management and a green harvest ensures optimum ripeness. An artisan approach to winemaking means open top fermenters, use of basket presses and bottling without filtration. There is a well priced entry level wine, Veraton, the regular Alto Moncayo and a very limited production top label Aquilon which requires a pretty deep pocket. (DM)
