Bonny Doon Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains
Randall Grahm’s Bonny Doon operation may have an eccentric and off-the-wall approach to marketing and labelling but the wines are impressive and generally very fairly priced. Grahm has sold his interest in the Big House labels and his output is much closer to his original boutique size of operation. The Rhône varieties are the backbone of the range, indeed Grahm is often thought of as the original ‘Rhône Ranger’. Le Cigare Volant (Grenache and Syrah) and Old Telegram (Mourvèdre) are both modelled on the great wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Syrah is sourced from a number of vineyards, the key to making consistently elegant examples which emphasise the beguiling feminine character of the grape. The approachable and vibrant Clos de Gilroy has been made on and off over the past couple of decades and is mainly Grenache from a number of sites and regions. The Rhône whites have included various bottles vinified from Roussanne and Viognier over the years. Among a major re-branding exercise there is a new label ‘Dewn’ under which an extensive range of wines are now being released and available for purchase through the winery website. (DM)
