Brewer Clifton Vineyards Sta. Rita Hills
Very small, recently established operation producing tiny amounts of very rich nd extracted, fullblown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from a number of vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills. The Pinots are fermented with whole clusters, see some new oak and are neither fined nor filtered. The oak is also reined in on the Chardonnays but they do undergo full malolactic, producing wines which are both richly textured and very full-bodied. As well as the wines rated here Pinot is produced from the AMPELOS, Cargasacchi, Machado and Hapgood vineyards and Chardonnay is sourced from Hapgood and Gnesa. Expect similarly rich and concentrated wines. All will stand a little age but can be enjoyed young. Steve Clifton also makes a range of very low-volume excellent Italian varietals under the PALMINA label. It will be interesting to see how these evolve compared with other California attempts. Greg Brewer is also the winemaker at the MELVILLE Winery just outside Lompoc in the Sta. Rita Hills. (DM)
