Cakebread Cellars Rutherford
Now a fairly substantial operation which the Cakebread family have been running for well over two decades. Production now runs to 18 wines, including an extensive premium range.
Chardonnay and Sauvignon are both rich and oaky in style, with the Reserve Chardonnay adding an extra element of depth and texture. Regular Merlot and Cabernet are well crafted and both are big, powerful and quite alcoholic reds. Pinot Noir now comes in a number of guises both appellation examples from Carneros and the Anderson Valley as well as three single vineyard wines.
Pinot is the dominant variety in the Rubaiyat red, a tank-fermented forward, fruit-driven, easy-drinking blend. Napa Valley Syrah includes a little Petite Sirah and Grenache and there is a Zinfandel from the Red Hills AVA in Lake County. The top cuvées are the three super-premium Cabernets. As well as the excellent Benchland Select, very small quantities of Vine Hill Ranch and Dancing Bear Ranch are also made. (DM)
