Calcareous Vineyard Paso Robles
Another recently created boutique Paso Robles operation producing low volume wines. Sisters Dana Brown and Erika Messer established Calcareous in 2000 with their father Lloyd Messer. Sourcing fruit from a range of sites but focusing on mainly their own classic limestone planted Westside vineyards, they produce Rhône, Bordeaux and Burgundian wine styles and their property consists of no less than 179 ha (442 acres) providing them with great future scope. Blackberry and black pepper notes mark the Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon offers typically ripe aromas of black fruits, cassis and just a hint of tobacco and cedar, gaining from ageing in a proportion of new French oak. The wines, particularly the red Rhône and Bordeaux styles are showing increasing quality in the latest releases. A well priced second range is labelled Twisted Paso. (DM)
