Carina Cellars Paso Robles
David Hardee works with winemaker Joey TENSLEY making a small and impressive range of Rhône style reds and whites. After the purchase in 2006, of a ranch, on the Westside of Paso Robles, all wines made since 2009 come from estate grapes, grown on steep vineyard sites. The Iconoclast, originally a Napa Valley-sourced red, is a richly textured blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Estate Viognier includes about 10% Grenache Blanc, with lots of minerality and finely balanced acidity. The intriguingly named Syrah 7 Percent (a reference to the Viognier component) is rich, supple and almost chocolatey with a piercing quality to its fruit. Two other estate Rhône blends; Clairvoyant and Sibylline are also made, with varying percentages of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache. A well priced Zinfandel is also made. Top reds and particularly the Iconoclast need a few years. (DM)
