Casanova di Neri

For all our readers we will now be bringing you regular full profiles from Wine behind the label with our ratings and price guides. This is one of the winery profiles for December included in the just published 11th digital edition edition 2020, which should give a small idea of what to look for with the guide, which can be purchased itself or included (virtually free) as part of an annual membership package. Here Neville, in one of his last winery profiles, updates one of the top names in Brunello di Montalcino.

Casanova di Neri (Montalcino)

The estate was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri and now his son, Giacomo holds sway. Seven vineyards straddle the appellation, Cerretalto, Le Cetine, Pietradonice, Fiesole, Poderuccio, Spereta and Podernuovo, all acquired over a period of time. The total area under vine is 63 hectares., with another 20 of olive groves.

Casanova di Neri

A state-of-the-art winery takes full advantage of gravity when selecting and vinifying. They are then aged in Slavonian oak barrels of varying sizes until the legal ageing requirements have been met. The Tenuta Nuova Brunello is a blend from four of the seven vineyards and displays elegance if perhaps lacking in a bit of complexity. The single vineyard Cerretalto (not a Riserva) is unique in some way inasmuch that the wine is produced from the small berries grown in that vineyard and then matured in old French barriques for the designated time. The result is a wine of real elegance and concentration with good persistence and embracing fruit. (NB)
