Castoro Cellars Paso Robles
Niels Udsen has a sizeable custom crush business in the eastern stretches of Paso Robles as well as making a small range of well-priced, mainly Paso Robles sourced reds and whites. The Udsens are also adding their own vineyards, three of which are now run organically. Cool, tank-fermented Fumé Blanc is full of clean, fresh, lightly varietal Sauvignon Blanc fruit with a hint of residual sugar and offers great value for the region. Cabernet Sauvignon is in a medium weight style, a touch angular with bright cherry fruit and a hint of oak spice. Richer and offering greater concentration is the Reserve Zin. It is low-yielding, densely textured Paso Robles Zinfandel with a lovely dark, smoky quality. Other top end labels include a mixed blend red Pasofusion, a Brut Champenoise sparkler from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, two Syrah’s and a Charbono. (DM)
