Chateau Margene Paso Robles
This small winery was established in 1998 and focuses on reds from the Bordeaux varieties. They draw on not only their own 2.5 ha (6 acre) estate vineyard but also from other sites as well, both Westside and Eastside. Yields are kept low, around 2 tons to the acre and the estate property is run using sustainable farming practices. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve wines come from not only the Margene property but also a number of other vineyards. Like the top wine, Beau Mélange, a cold soak is employed for both prior to fermentation and ageing is in a mix of French and American oak. The output of Beau Mélange is tiny, around 100 cases a year. It is produced only from estate fruit and blends 50% Cabernet Sauvignon with a quarter each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Ageing is for over 30 months in a large proportion of new French oak, around a half the period the wine stays on lees. All three wines are in a very rich and very ripe fruited style and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. (DM)
