Chateau Potelle Winery Mount Veeder
The Fourmeaux family origins are in the French wine trade but Marketta and Jean-Noël have made a very good job of producing classically original, stylish California wines. The VGS labels are particularly impressive, none more so than the Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon vinified from estate-grown mountain fruit. These are big, structured wines which need time, 5 years or so, to soften their youthfully aggressive, at times angular tannins.
Chardonnay is barrel-fermented with nicely judged oak, Sauvignon Blanc is fresh and floral but further complexity is added with a small amount of Sémillon and a portion of the fruit barrel-fermented on lees. Other VGS labels also include Merlot, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Franc. while a red blend Illegitimate comes from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel and Syrah. A Grenache Blanc, Inevitabel White from Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Viognier, and a Riviera Rosé from Cinsault and Syrah complete the range. (DM)
