Cline Cellars Carneros
Along with Randall Grahm of BONNY DOON, Fred Cline was one of the original Rhône Rangers. From his 142 ha (350 acre) property he produces a plethora of Zins and some first-class Rhône styles. The family have some of the most extensive plantings of Rhône varieties in the state and account for no less than 85% of all Mourvèdre plantings, although fruit is also sourced widely elsewhere and both the Single Vineyard and Ancient Vines wines stand out. Some solid whites are also produced but they lack the same excitement as the reds, with their vibrant, spicy, berry fruit character. At the top end they posses not only rich, concentrated fruit but marvellously honed, supple tannins – wines of weight and finesse. The fact that they represent great value is another major plus. An extensive range of reds and whites are now also made from Sonoma County. (DM)
