Clos Mogador Priorat
Talented owner and winemaker René Barbier advises at a number of other wineries, including Daphne Glorian’s CLOS I TERASSES, as well as producing wine here at his own 20-ha property. Clos Mogador is yet another super-rich, extracted, deep and dense example of this exciting appellation. The blend is Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and, unusually, Pinot Noir, which just adds a piercingly fragrant note. A big, structured wine, it will develop very well with age. As well as producing his brilliant red, René Barbier has long been interested in making a benchmark white Priorat. The final blend for the wine is a fascinating mix of Garnacha Blanca, Viognier, Pinot Noir (vinified as a white) and a little Roussanne, Marsanne and Maccabeo. The plots are located at high altitude on the hill of Ermita, one of the great sites of the appellation. Viognier is also supplied by Christopher Cannan of CLOS FIGUERAS, who mistakenly planted it instead of Syrah. The wine is part vinified in oak and part in stainless steel and has great style and intensity. Barbier is also involved at Vinyes de MANYETES. (DM)
