Coeur de Terre Vineyard Willamette Valley
The Neals established their property in 1998. Their vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir as well as Syrah, a small amount of Viognier to co-ferment with the Syrah in future releases, Rieslng and unusually for Oregon, Gruner Veltliner. Pinot Noir is the main focus though understandably and there are a number of different blocks with a range of clones as well as both single and double guyot trellising. Of the wines, the estate Pinot is selected from across the vineyard holdings and offers a classic strawberry scented, elegant Pinot style. The Renelle’s Block Reserve is the first of the reserve wines here to be released. It is darker and more structured with black cherry fruit and supple tannins. It is complex and will develop well with three or four years of ageing. The Riesling is marked by a combination of green apple and underlying citrus with nicely balanced acidity and impressive carry and intensity. It will be interesting to see the other varieties in future because quality and value are good here. (DM)
