Colgin Cellars Napa Valley
Colgin now offers a number of super-premium bottlings. All are extremely expensive (the winery release prices can also be rapidly dwarfed by trading prices at auction) and two are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, although the Cariad red is Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (all sourced from the Madrona Vineyard) blended with some fruit from Thorevilos and Howell Mountain. Unblended Cabernet Sauvignon in two guises is produced from the Herb Lamb (most recent vintage 2007) and Tychson Hill vineyards. The main focus is gradually moving to two estate wines, the Estate Napa Valley Red (same blend as the Cariad with a little Petit Verdot) and Estate Syrah. The wines are neither fined nor filtered and spend around two years in new French oak. All undoubtedly offer considerable weight, depth and rich textures. The winemaking reins are now in the hands of Allison Tauziet, vineyard expertise is provided by David ABREU and further consultation comes from Bordelais Alain Raynaud producer of Château QUINAULT in Saint-Émilion. Expect all the wines to be of at least ★★★★ to ★★★★★ quality if you can obtain any through the mailing list. (DM)
