Cono Sur Rapel
This operation was established in 1993. There are extensive estate-owned vineyards and the company sources fruit from Casablanca, Maipo, Rapel and the Bío Bío Valley. Under the Bicicleta label some attractively fruity reds and whites are produced. Reserva Especial labelled Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir are all decent and well priced, while the Visión range is a step up and coming from specific terroirs. A small range of organic wines are also now being made and are released as Organic. Top wines are the 20 Barrels Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Pinot Noir is also produced in a limited edition bottling under the Ocio brand and is Chile’s first super-premium bottling of the variety, although it appears to have some way to go to match other new world examples. The Cabernet and Merlot are extracted and forward as is the case with so many premium Chilean reds and characterised by dark berry, fruit. Pinot Noir shows a decent balance of strawberry, lightly savoury fruit with marked high-toast oak. (DM)
